Managing Human Resources in the Slovak Basketball Association

The purpose of this case study was to identify the key Human Resource problems and underlying issues within the Slovak Basketball Association and to outline alternative solutions and find and recommend the best-fitting solution.

The Slovak Basketball Association (SBA for short) is the national association which groups together basketball clubs, trainers, coaches and is the umbrella organization for Slovak national teams. It organizes tournaments and competitions at all levels. The SBA also focuses on educating the youth as well as its coaches.

Among our findings, we observed that the Slovak Basketball Association did not have a structured, standardized and formalized job description for the positions within the organization. Overall, the organization is struggling with funds and has a restricted amount of money. An HR director or manager could lead the human resource duties and take the burden from the Secretary General, who could in turn focus on the managerial duties of the organization.

We based our analysis on the theory found in the handbook: ‘Managing Olympic Sport Organisations’ (2007), under the chapter ‘Managing Human Resources’ and facts and information about SBA found on their website (www.slovakbasket.sk). We conducted several interviews with the assistant of the Secretary General and also based our study on our own observation of the functioning of SBA as well as on the personal experience of the author of working for the organisation.

Due to a lack of funds, we concluded that a possible strategy may be a balanced mixture of a new in-office position as well as outsourcing all PR work to a professional external company. Hiring a Human Resources Director could be a possibility in the future once the financial means of the organisation would be higher.
